The water cycle is important to the N.C. Appalachian Highlands because it provides water sources for many of the aquatic ecosystems in the higher altitudes and is key to supporting many of the rare plants and animals that call them home.

The sulfur cycle is important to the highlands because it is a key part in getting the plants and animals the nutrients they need to survive in higher altitudes.

 

The carbon cycle is important to the N.C. Highlands because it is a key part in the decomposition and repurposing of organic matter into the rocky soil that needs nutrients to support the vast plant life

the nitrogen cycle is important to the highlands because it gives plants and animals the minerals, specifically nitrates, that they need.

The phosphorus cycle is important to the highlands because it is a key part in the decomposing of dead organisms in an ecosystem where space is already limited. As well as giving the Appalachians the geological minerals they have and allowing their sediment to greatly affect and shape the sensitive biomes that they house.
